What is Hip Pain? And, Can Chiropractic Care Help?

“I have hip pain, “ says one Burnsville, MN resident. But, what is it really?  The hip area includes the lower back, upper leg and buttocks. Understanding the true source of the pain is the key to understanding the best treatment options, which can include chiropractic care.

Many times, pain can be referred from other areas, such as the low back. A pinched nerve between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae often refers pain to the hip area. Upper thigh or upper buttock pain can also be referred to as hip pain, but may not actually be coming from the hip. Sciatica, which is due to a pinched nerve in the lower back, refers pain to the hip, buttocks and leg.

Hip pain can come from the hip joint, and is often felt in the groin area. It is caused by an injury or a chronic condition, like arthritis.

Tendinitis and bursitis may cause the tendon around the hip to become inflamed. This is often caused by overuse from strenuous activities. Iliotibial Band Syndrome can cause tendinitis, most commonly found in runners. Bursitis is where the fluid-filled bursae sacks that cushion the bony part of the hip become inflamed from overuse or irritation. Gate issues can be a source of the irritation.

Don’t ignore your hip pain. Your chiropractor will diagnose the source of the pain and recommend a treatment plan, which often includes adjustments, orthotics for your shoes and rehabilitative exercises.
