Backpack Safety for Burnsville Kids Returning to School

As the dog days of summer come to an end in Burnsville, MN, it’s time to realize the opening of school is just around the corner. Kids are heading to the stores to get their back to school items to fill their backpacks. With full backpacks, can come injury if they are not adjusted or carried correctly.

Backpacks are a leading cause of back and shoulder pain in children and adolescents. You chiropractor wants you to get the facts, so all kids can have a safe school year.

The Weight of it All

Kids have been known to develop headaches from carrying or sitting too long with heavy backpacks. So, lift your child’s backpack and set it on the scale.

The American Chiropractic Association recommends the weight of the backpack be no more than 10% of the weight of the child. So, if the child weighs 60 lbs., the backpack should be less than 6 lbs. Even adults who carry a pack or bag should follow this rule.

Choosing the Right Pack

Before you buy the next cute backpack with your child’s favorite character on it, have them try it on for size. The backpack should never be wider than their shoulders or longer than their torso. It should not sit more than 4 inches below their waist. If the backpack sits too low, it can cause the child to lean forward as they walk, and possibly put them off balance leading to falls and injuries.

When looking for a backpack, choose one that has:

  • Two padded adjustable straps
  • A padded back
  • Chest and waist straps
  • Multiple compartments
  • And is lightweight

Take the new backpack for a test run, and adjust the straps properly before the first day of school.

Filling it Up

Be sure to put heavier items (like books) in the pack next to the back. Use the compartments to distribute the weight in different areas, so the pack is not bottom heavy or lean to one side. Keep any pointy or bulky items away from the child’s back.

Remind your child to always wear it with both straps when the pack has items in it. They should also use both the chest and waist straps for stability.

Educate your child on the importance of using their backpack properly. Tell them to let them know if they are experiencing any pain from carrying their backpack. Then, see your chiropractor for an evaluation.

Have a successful and healthy school year!
