Getting the Yardwork Done Without the Pain

by Karlynn L. Benson, D.C.

After all the rain, then comes the yardwork and gardening. We Minnesotans love being outside in our yards now that the snow is gone. But, your body is conditioned to sitting on the couch, not bending-over pulling weeds. Let’s review a few ways to avoid the aches, and learn how chiropractic can help you ease into summer without pain.

Forming a Good Gardening Routine

A good routine of stretching and and exercise helps your body adjust and prepare for the outside work. We can work with you to devise a specialized plan for your particular needs.

You should always start with a warm-up. Your muscles need a little exercise to get going each day. Do a short brisk walk or jog. Continue with some basic bends and pulls to stretch the warmed muscles. We have specific stretching tips for gardeners on our blog.

Once you’ve pulled all those weeds, stretch again. We all want to sit-down with a cold drink at the end of the gardening session, but taking a few minutes to make sure all your muscle groups have had their proper stretching will help you feel better in the morning.

If you are feeling pain in a specific muscle, apply ice. Just like a good workout at the gym, a nice hot shower or bath will help relieve the muscle stress.

Water is your friend. Keep your body hydrated during your gardening, and continue to during plenty of water after you are done with the yardwork.

Chiropractic Keeps Your Frame Balanced

To do do your best work, your main tool, your body, needs to be in its best shape. Chiropractors understand your musculoskeletal health and how to maintain it. If your body is aligned, it will help you avoid future injuries.

The weeding, digging, watering and planting can all take a toll on the body. Chiropractic can restore your body’s alignment, so you can continue with these activities and avoid future misalignments.
