Chiropractic Care and the Breast Cancer Patient

October is Breast Cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is one of the leading cancers for women, including those in Burnsville, MN. Let’s celebrate and share the benefits of chiropractic care for breast cancer patients by looking at how it can help with quality of life and as an integrated treatment.

Since it is October, we are going to focus on the benefits of chiropractic care for breast cancer patients. But, note, many of these advantages are also beneficial for patients with other cancers.

An Integrated Treatment

We don’t live in a medical vacuum. A study from the Journal of Clinical Oncology reports 83.3% of cancer patients studied used at least one alternative therapy along with medical treatment.

Reasons to use an integrated medical and chiropractic approach

  • Pain management
  • Improved function
  • Boost immune system

In fact, chiropractic care can be a great partner with radiation oncology. A recent article on the American Society for Radiation Oncology’s blog shares how some cancer centers are partnering with chiropractors. The goal is to help patients with the effects of frequent body positioning for radiation treatments.

Jeffrey Sklar, D.C.  notes about chiropractic pain management, “When this muscle hypertonicity is combined with lying in certain positions for extended periods of time during treatment, muscle discomfort can increase exponentially. Offering patients a more immediate sense of relief allows for continued care so the patient may return to their activities of daily living following treatment.”

Looking for a Better Quality of Life When Living with Breast Cancer

We’ve already discussed how chiropractic care offers patients help with pain management. It also helps relieve the stress and anxiety that goes along with the diagnosis.

An American Chiropractic Association looked at how chiropractic can help minimize collateral damage to some patients by reducing blood pressure, nausea, headaches, neuropathy, and hiccups.

The Canadian Cancer Society notes chiropractic as a complementary therapy for cancer patients may be helpful for:

  • Low back pain
  • Migraines or other headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Joint pain

Monitoring the Musculoskeletal System

Certain cancers, including breast cancer, may metastasize to the musculoskeletal system with malignancy. A Chiro.org reported on the diagnosis of metastasizing by a chiropractor of a patient with breast cancer in her history. Once the malignancy was diagnosed, chiropractic can still play role in offering treatments for relief from pain as discussed above.

As we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, know Skyline Chiropractic is here to help and support cancer patients.
