Hearth Health and Chiropractic

February is Heart Health Month. It’s also the month with Valentine’s Day right in the middle reminding us of hearts, hearts, and more hearts! So, take the hint and love your heart by learning how you can take better care of it.

Know the Risks

Heart disease describes a range of conditions affecting the heart, including blood vessel disease, arrhythmias, heart defects, heart valve disease, infections, and others. Many of these can be prevented or treated by making healthy lifestyle choices.

Key risk high-risk factors:

  • Obesity

  • Diabetes

  • Smoking

  • High blood pressure

  • High Cholesterol

  • Lack of exercise

  • Family history

Love Your Heart with Healthy Choices

The first place to start loving your heart is with your diet choices. The American Heart Association recommends a diet that emphasizes:

  • A wide variety of fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains and products made up mostly of whole grains
  • Healthy sources of protein (mostly plants such as legumes and nuts; fish and seafood; low-fat or nonfat dairy; and, if you eat meat and poultry, ensuring it is lean and unprocessed)
  • Liquid non-tropical vegetable oils
  • Minimally processed foods
  • Minimized intake of added sugars
  • Foods prepared with little or no salt
  • Limited or preferably no alcohol intake

But eating is just one part of the healthy heart equation. You need to look to total wellness by including:

Chiropractic Benefits for Your Heart

Chiropractic care can help you manage risks for heart disease. Starting with keeping your body moving and feeling better overall. It’s key to remember that your body’s nervous system is run by the spinal column. Keeping the nerve channels and connections operating at their best is key to overcoming a heart problem.

Chiropractic adjustments help patients reduce inflammation, which is a symptom and cause of several chronic cardiovascular conditions. Reducing inflammation will help you prevent heart issues from developing.

A 2007 study found that a special chiropractic adjustment can significantly lower blood pressure. This placebo-controlled study showed the chiropractic adjustment had the same effect as two blood-pressure medications in controlling blood pressure.

As we’ve discussed previously, chiropractic care helps to reduce stress and improves sleep, which are key to heart health.
